Quick takes on DA films currently in theaters. Some of the
films previewed here will be reviewed in detail later on. |
|
| Enemy of the State |
Will Smith is an up and coming DA heavyweight. I
haven't seen the complete trailer yet, but the scenes of him running around like a
clueless wonder remind us of his previous films ID4 and Men In Black -
impeccable references. |
| The Siege |
Just look at the "disturbing" (read:hilarious)
scenes in the trailers. The slow motion shot of Denzel Washington getting refuse
blown in his face is unbelievable - I mean, it looks like he was standing a mile away from
the explosion and yet he was not fast enough to turn away? Also, look at the slow
motion scene of the van crashing through the building - it's sideways. Last but
not least, Denzel performs a gratuitous Akido roll into an elementary school classroom and
opens fire with his pistol displaying his trademark facial determination. This one's
a keeper I assure you... |
| John Carpenter's Vampires |
In the tradition of From Dusk Till Dawn, we have
lots of vampiric BIM to look forward to. James Woods does a great job flying through
the air with dual pistols, and the camera sequence of him "strutting" away from
an exploding building are hilarious - you can even see him starting to laugh during the
scene... |
| What Dreams May Come |
Hey, isn't this supposed to be a romantic tear jerker?
Well, the trailers show BIM of the highest order (dare I say...Heavenly?),
"wondrous" special effects which look fake upon close inspection, and hey -
Robin Williams and his entire family perish in freak accidents. Can you say,
"Why mia familia???". I knew you could... |
| Soldier |
I've only seen a couple spots for this movie, but even the
trailers make fun of the movie itself by showing bad guys begging for their lives. It's
Kurt Russell at his best, trying to pick up where Stargate and Escape from
L.A. fizzled out. |
| Ronin |
The trailer shows a guy using a rocket launcher through a
car's sunroof, shooting at another car. The target car explodes, with it's rear end
twisting forward vertically... 'Nuff said. |
| Blade |
The trailers feature BIM of a "vampiric" order.
Lots of dual pistols, martial arts, and hey - stationary sword fighting?
Looks cool to normal viewers; looks ridiculous to DA viewers. |
| Knock Off |
Van Damme at his best? Doesn't look like it.
However, the scene of him snarling at the end of the trailer, slowly wrapping a chain
around his left arm is more than enough to get my $6.50. |
| Armageddon |
This one's obvious. It looks like an MTV video on
acid. However, I hear that Bruce Willis wasn't pleased with audience feedback.
According to Entertainment Weekly, his performance was greeted by (can you believe
it?) laughter at the Cannes Film Festival. |
